Navigating Florida's Winter and Early Spring Wedding Seasons

While the rest of the country shuts down their outdoor wedding venues from December through February, Florida's wedding industry kicks into a unique second gear. The winter and early spring season offers crisp air, zero humidity, and completely different logistical rules.

If you are planning a winter or early spring wedding in Tampa Bay or Hernando County, here is what you need to prepare for.

The "Snowbird" Effect on Vendor Availability

January and February are peak tourist and "snowbird" months in Florida. While this guarantees great weather for your out-of-town guests, it also means that hotel room blocks, transportation, and flights will be at their absolute most expensive.

If you are hosting a winter wedding, you must secure your room blocks 9 to 12 months in advance, or your guests may be priced out of attending.

The Cold Front Reality

Yes, it gets cold in Florida. Between December and February, strong cold fronts can push evening temperatures down into the 40s.

If you are booking a completely outdoor venue or an open-air barn:

  • Rent commercial heaters: Do this in advance. If you wait until the week of a cold front, every rental company in Tampa Bay will be sold out.
  • Provide blankets: A basket of pashminas or fleece blankets during the ceremony is a highly appreciated touch.
  • Warm beverages: Swap the signature iced cocktails for hot toddies, spiked coffee, or a luxury hot chocolate bar during dessert.

The Early Sunset

In December and January, the sun sets around 5:40 PM. To capture natural light photos, your ceremony must start no later than 3:30 PM or 4:00 PM. This means your reception will likely start earlier (around 5:30 PM), which can feel strange to guests used to dancing late into the night.

To combat the early darkness, heavily invest in professional uplighting and dance floor lighting to create a warm, inviting atmosphere inside the reception space once the sun goes down.
