Outdoor audio is where great DJs separate from mediocre ones. The Florida outdoor wedding environment — humidity, wind, wide open spaces, noise ordinances — creates challenges that require specific expertise. Here are the exact questions to ask.
"Do you have a dedicated secondary system for the ceremony?"
Your ceremony and reception are separate acoustic environments. A professional DJ should have a completely separate, dedicated speaker system for outdoor ceremonies — ideally battery-powered — so they're not running orange extension cords across your venue grounds. If they plan to use the same system for both, that's a significant red flag.
"Do you carry lapel microphones for the officiant?"
At an outdoor ceremony with 100+ guests, your officiant needs to be amplified. A wireless lapel mic clips discretely to their lapel and routes through the ceremony speakers. If your DJ shows up with only a handheld mic, half your ceremony will be inaudible.
"How do you handle wind noise on outdoor microphones?"
Professional DJs use foam deadcats (windscreens) on all outdoor microphones. Without these, any breeze creates a thundering roar in the audio feed that ruins recordings. If they don't know what you're talking about, move on.
"Are you familiar with the noise ordinances at my venue?"
Brooksville, Spring Hill, and most of Hernando County have noise ordinances that limit outdoor amplified music — often at 10 PM for residential-adjacent properties. Your DJ should know this and have a plan.
"What is your backup equipment policy?"
Every critical component (main speakers, amp, laptop/source, wireless mics) should have a backup. Ask specifically: what do you do if your main speaker fails mid-reception?
"Can you provide references from outdoor Florida venues?"
Ask for references from venues you recognize — Saxon Manor, The Barn at Oak Creek, outdoor beach ceremonies. A DJ with real outdoor Florida experience will have a reference list ready.
