Your wedding DJ has the power to make or break your reception. They control the flow, the energy, and the timeline of your entire evening. Yet, many couples only ask one question: *"How much do you cost?"*
If you want to guarantee a packed dance floor and a stress-free night, you need to dig deeper. Here are the 10 crucial questions you must ask a potential DJ during your initial consultation.
Experience and Style
1. "Can you describe your MC style?"
This is arguably the most important question. Do they talk constantly between songs? Do they make cheesy jokes? Do they do interactive games? Or are they polished, professional, and only use the microphone for essential announcements? Make sure their style matches your vision.
2. "How do you handle guests requesting songs we don't want to hear?"
A good DJ knows how to diplomatically decline a bad request without offending your guests. You want a DJ who respects your Do-Not-Play list above all else.
3. "How do you transition between songs?"
You are looking for the words "beat-matching" or "seamless mixing." You do NOT want a DJ who lets a song completely fade out to silence before pressing play on the next track, creating awkward dead air.
Logistics and Gear
4. "Do you have a dedicated secondary setup for the ceremony?"
If your ceremony and reception are in two different areas (very common at Florida outdoor venues), your DJ should have two completely separate sound systems. They should not be dragging speakers from the lawn into the barn while your guests wait in silence.
5. "What is your backup plan if equipment fails?"
Technology fails. It happens. A professional DJ carries a backup laptop, a backup mixing board, backup microphones, and extra cables to every single wedding. If they don't, run.
6. "What happens if YOU get sick or have an emergency?"
A solo hobbyist DJ has no backup plan. A professional entertainment company always has a qualified backup DJ on standby every weekend, with access to all your timeline details and playlists.
Business and Professionalism
7. "Do you require a vendor meal?"
This is a trick question — you *should* provide a vendor meal, but a true professional will never hold your reception hostage over it. They should have a clear policy on when and how they eat (usually simultaneously with the couple).
8. "Are you fully insured?"
Many luxury venues will not let a DJ on the property without a Certificate of Insurance (COI) proving they have liability coverage. If they aren't insured, they aren't a legitimate business.
9. "What do you wear to weddings?"
You want a DJ who looks the part. Whether that's a sharp suit, a tailored vest, or all-black professional attire, they should blend into a formal event, not look like they just left a nightclub.
10. "Do you provide a written contract?"
Never hand over a deposit without a signed contract outlining exactly what services are provided, the hours of coverage, the payment schedule, and the cancellation policy.
